Texas Licensing Requirements

REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN A TEXAS MOTORCYCLE LICENSE  

If you are 18 years or older these are the steps required for you to get a motorcycle endorsement:

 IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST LICENSE OF ANY CLASS, YOU HAVE NO DRIVER’S LICENSE OR LEARNER’S PERMIT

  1. Take our Basic RiderCourse, and present Course Completion Card when applying for Endorsement.
  2. Complete Adult Driver Education and present proof of completion.
  3. Take  the Texas Driver’s License Knowledge Test, only test with questions about signs and rules of the road. 
  4. Take a Motorcycle Road Test (since no car road test taken, you will need to prove your driving competency). 
  5. Pass the Vision Examination.
  6. Pay the required fees. 

IF YOU HAVE A DRIVER’S LICENSE LEARNER’S PERMIT:

  1. Take our Basic RIderCourse, and present Course Completion Card when applying for Endorsement.
  2. Present your Learner’s Permit (If you hold a learner’s permit for a state other than Texas, additional proof of identity is required; please visit http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/DriverLicense/residencyReqNonCDL.htm for a list of acceptable documents. You will need to surrender your current out of state learner’s permit and obtain a Texas Learner’s Permit). 
  3. Take a Motorcycle Road Test (since no car road test taken, you will need to prove your driving competency). 
  4. Pass the Vision Examination.
  5. Pay the required fees. 

IF YOU HAVE A  DRIVER’S LICENSE FROM TEXAS OR ANY OTHER STATE

  1. 1. Take either our Basic RiderCourse or our Total Control Intermediate Riding Clinc, and present Course Completion Card when applying for endorsement.
  2. Present your current Texas Driver’s License (If you hold a driver’s license for a state other than Texas, additional proof of identity is required; please visit http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/DriverLicense/residencyReqNonCDL.htm for a list of acceptable documents. You will need to surrender your current out of state driver’s license and obtain a Texas Driver’s License). 
  3. Pass the Vision Examination. 
  4. Pay the required fee(s).   

As of January 12, 2015 you will not need to take a written test to obtain your endorsement. If your licensing office is requiring you to complete one, please ask them to reference RULE CHANGE §15.55 effective January 12, 2015. You can also print a copy of the handout below, or open this file on a portable tablet or smartphone and show the licensing officer.

Once all these requirements have been met, a “M” class endorsement will be added to your driver’s license. Congratulations!
